Universal fillies Rule at Belmont

Last year’s champion WA freshman Universal Ruler is odds-on to collect the second-season title after siring a city double on Wednesday.

The Scenic Lodge resident has sired the winners of 30 races and over $850,000 this season after his three year-old fillies Rule To Wyn and Fo’ Shizzle saluted at Belmont.

Rule To Wyn scored by more than two lengths from odds-on favourite Volkoff. “She’s honest and appreciated Jordan Turner’s 3kg claim,” trainer Jim Taylor said. “We thought she would get a nice trail behind the leaders looking at the speed map and that’s how it panned out.”

Owners David and Michelle Bagley bought the filly as a foal for $26,000. She’s a half-sister to LR Gimcrack Stakes winner Darlington Abbey and her younger brother Sovereign Hall is an unraced two year-old with Ted Martinovich.

Their dam Wynyard Hall (Blackfriars) is a sister to G2 WA Derby winner Rohan.

Fo’ Shizzle stayed on for her first win in town after duelling with Clobberetta down the straight. She had won at Northam and Narrogin late last year for Impressive Racing’s managing owner Kevin Berry and trainer Darren McAuliffe.

“She came across and was comfortable outside Clobberetta,” jockey Chloe Azzopardi said. “I had been riding her trackwork and was confident she would still be there at the finish. It worked out that way and she will get further than 1300 metres.”

Fo’ Shizzle is the final foal from Precocious Lady (Kenvain). The mare had won a Kalgoorlie maiden and was pensioned after foaling a Dick Turpin colt in September 2013.

The Impressive Racing team won 4 black-type sprints in 12 starts with Universal Ruler before he retired to Scenic Lodge. They have also nominated his stakes winning gelding Rebel King for the TAB Touch Sprint (1000m) at Belmont this Saturday.

Universal Ruler (pictured) has an outstanding winning strike-rate of 51% this season and that’s only been bettered by I Am Invincible (52%) among second-season sires in Australia.

Scenic Lodge will stand Universal Ruler for a $5,500 (plus gst) fee this year.
