Fifth Title For Blackfriars

Blackfriars has claimed a fifth WA sires’ premiership in row and his latest title continued the domination of Scenic Lodge in the Sunspeed State.  The Muchea based nursery has been home to WA champion sires for the last 14 years!

It’s legendary stallion Scenic (Ire) rewrote the record books during his halcyon days in Western Australia.  His first locally bred two year-olds raced in 2001-02 and he was never headed claiming 9 premierships in a row until 2009-10.

Blackfriars (Danehill) hasn’t missed a beat either since he took over in 2010-11.  He put the finishing touches on a fifth title when Erika won the Slickpix Maiden Plate (1300m) in Canberra on Friday. Erika’s victory closed out a career-best season for Blackfriars.  He sired 70 individual winners of 130 races and $4,493,540 in prizemoney.

Blackfriars sired 5 stakes winners during the season – Black Heart Bart, London Line, Pop Culture, Shining Knight, Son Of Something – and they won a total of 11 black-type races.

Brilliant filly Blackwood will be the next Blackfriars to take centre-stage in Perth.  She was unbeaten in four starts by a combined margin of 14 lengths for trainer Fred Kersley who tried in vain to keep a lid on her black-type prospects as a three year-old.

Scenic Lodge is also home to Universal Ruler who won the WA second-season premiership with 23 winners of 35 races and $1,159,302.  His chief earner Rebel King closed out the season with a Listed victory in the Bolton Sprint at Belmont on July 25. Universal Ruler (Scenic) finished with a 52% strike-rate which was next best on the Australia second-season ladder behind I Am Invincible (55%).

Proven sire Snippetson (Snippets) adds another dimension to the Scenic Lodge roster this year.  He sired the winners of 13 juvenile races in 2014-15 and will apply pressure to reigning champion Oratorio (Aus) for this season’s WA 2YO premiership.
