Scenic Lodge founder David Smith has announced his retirement from the industry and will sell his horses unreserved at the Inglis Online February (Early) Sale.
The Muchea nursery has also catalogued 17 yearlings for the Perth Magic Millions on February 22 and 23.
Smith’s son Jeremy and his wife Sarah will take over ownership of Scenic Lodge and will continue to operate the business from March 1.
David Smith bought the property in 1996 and named it Durham Lodge after his birthplace in north-east England. It had been a very successful training complex for the owner-trainer team of Wally Hannah and Ted Hickling with Group 1 gallopers Barrosa Boy, Importune and Eastern Temple.
Buying Irish-bred stallion Scenic (Sadler’s Wells) from Lindsay Park in 1998 and installing him as foundation sire was an inspired choice. He exploded at the turn of the century with Group 1 winners Universal Prince, Episode, Lord Essex, Piavonic and Scenic Peak.
“At one stage Scenic was running third in the Australian sires’ premiership behind Danehill and Zabeel,” Jeremy recalled. “That’s something no other sire in WA has ever, or perhaps will ever, achieve.”
It was also the beginning of an unprecedented 21-year reign in Western Australia during which the stud changed names from Durham Lodge to Scenic Lodge. Scenic (Ire) won 9 local titles in a row between 2002 and 2010 and, in a seamless transition, Blackfriars took command and added another 12 premierships between 2011 and 2022.
“We bought Blackfriars from Swettenham Stud and had to pay good money for a Group 1 Victorian Derby-winning son of Danehill,” Jeremy added. “He will be remembered as the greatest stallion to have ever been based in this State and now his son Playing God is the dominant force in Western Australia.”

Planet Cash had been backed from $10 into $6 before the Quayclean Hcp (1400m) on Saturday and bookmakers would have been happy when the lightyl-raced 3yo was spotting the favourite Triple Jay six lengths into the straight at Belmont.
Backmarkers weren’t making ground in the Soft 7 conditions but the bias couldn’t counteract Planet Cash (Photo / Western Racepix) when he powered home to defeat Sunny Honey (Patronize) and Californication (Preferment).
“We were relatively confident after he really hit the line first-up here a fortnight ago,” trainer Hayden Ballantyne said. “He had missed a trial with a foot abscess and needed that hit-out. He was a long way back today but that serious turn of foot made all the difference. He will have one more run and then go out for the Ascot season.”
Bred by managing part-owner Karl Kazmer, he’s by Scenic Lodge sire Dash For Cash from Belmont winner Planet Claire (Zedrich) who is two for two at stud having foaled Belmont winner Astro Warrior (Demerit) for the same connections. Her 2yo filly Zeezea (Patronize) is also with Ballantyne and the mare was bred back to Dash For Cash last September.
Dash For Cash has sired 411 individual winners at a 65% strike-rate. The popular grey galloper was a Group 1 winner at Flemington and Caulfield and initially stood at Swettenham Stud in Victoria before transferring west in 2014.
Scenic Lodge completed a Belmont double in the TABtouch Hcp (1300m) when Vane Tempest spaced the Dan Morton-trained Featherweight in the TABtouch Hcp (1300m). They also filled out a quinella for former Scenic Lodge sire Snippetson.
Vane Tempest’s dam Quantum Leap (Regal Classic) was a $70,000 buy for Scenic Lodge at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She is the mare’s only WA-bred foal and was retained by Scenic Lodge founder David Smith knowing her residual value as a younger half-sister to Outlandish Lad (G3 SAJC McKay Stakes) and He’sfantastic (LR VRC Interlink Stakes).
Scenic Lodge sire Universal Ruler had weighed in with two winners at the Belmont barrier trials last Monday. His unraced 3yo Ardent Fox scored by three lengths for owner-breeder Wally Daly and trainers Sean and Jake Casey. He’s a half-brother to LR Carbine Club of WA Stakes (1400m) winner Xaaravid.
Zenique also impressed winning a juvenile hit-out for Mitch Pateman and he has been nominated to debut at Belmont this Wednesday.

Scenic Lodge resident Universal Ruler sired his 10th Stakes winner when Rusty Dreams took advantage of a rails run to land the LR Belmont Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.
Rusty Dreams had been runner-up in the LR Raconteur Stakes (1400m) at her previous start and was handled patiently from an outside gate by Chris Parnham. The 3yo filly burst through a gap along the fence and then went clear to score impressively.
Parnham joined his brothers Brad (Variation in 2017) and Steven (Kay Cee in 2020) on the Belmont Guineas honour-roll with a superb ride. “She was the best horse in the race and I just got lucky,” Parnham told The West Australian. “I rode her quietly because she also had the best turn of foot.
“I laid on her neck when we jumped and she relaxed nicely. She will run a mile and beyond next season and will be suited in races like the Starstruck and La Trice Classics.”
Rusty Dreams (Photo / Western Racepix) completed a hat-trick at Ascot in April and her earnings have now reached $374,820 including Westspeed Bonuses of $160,950 for a partnership managed by her breeder Peter Capararo of Canal Enterprises.
Her older half-brother Rusty Spirit (Trade Fair) won twice at Ascot in March for trainers Cliff Smith & Jo Leeson. They are the only foals from unraced mare She Done Him Wrong (Oratorio) who descends from G2 Champion Fillies Stakes winner Mercurial Madam (Is It True).
Trainer Michael Lane was confident Rusty Dreams could win the black-type feature.
“We haven’t done much with her since the Raconteur but we knew she was fine for today. She was headstrong early on and we couldn’t afford to kick her out of the gates because she would probably over-race.” Lane later confirmed she will progress to the LR Belmont Oaks (2000m) on July 1.
Universal Ruler (Scenic) and former Taunton Vale sire Demerit (Lonhro) head the WA 3YO sires table for individual winners (14) just ahead of Playing God, Maschino and Oratorio all on 13.
He also sired a third 2yo winner this season – following Wiley Girl and Princess Lacillia – when King Cartel was successful in the Free Entry To Belmont Park Hcp (1200m) on Saturday. Bred by Grant McLearie, he’s out of the Steve Wolfe-trainer winner Miss Somebody (Demerit) who also has a filly foal by Universal Ruler.

Universal Ruler heads the table for Westspeed-bred 3yo winners this season and his promising filly Rusty Dreams is poised to improve her strike-rate at Belmont on Saturday.
Rusty Dreams has opened an even-money favorite in the Glenroy Chaff Plate (1400m) for trainer Michael Lane and jockey Willie Pike. She is one of 14 individual 3yo winners by the Scenic Lodge stallion giving him a margin among active sires over Playing God (12) and Maschino (10).
In the lead-up to the start of the Belmont winter season, Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith has announced Universal Ruler will stand for a value-plus $7,500 fee this year alongside Dash For Cash at $2,000. Both fees (plus GST).
“Universal Ruler (pictured) has cemented his position as a proven sire and he’s a no-brainer for broodmare owners who breed to race or breed to sell,” Smith said. “He’s one of WA’s most successful commercial sires and his current 3yo crop was followed by a book of 117 mares which was the largest in WA that season.”
At the Perth Magic Millions in February, Universal Ruler had a 100% clearance-rate in Book 1 at an average of $73,000. His Swan Valley yearlings were purchased by Justin Warwick ($110k), Jim Taylor ($100k), Ryan Hill ($80k), John Chalmers ($80k) and Noel Carter ($80k).
Rusty Dreams (3f Universal Ruler – She Done Him Wrong by Oratorio) completed a hat-trick at Ascot last month prior to losing her unbeaten record as an odds-on favourite behind Catch These Hands (Rommel). She is raced in partnership by her breeder Peter Capararo.
This Saturday also marks the anniversary of Universal Ruler’s G3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) victory in 2009. He sired The Velvet King to win the 2021 Belmont Sprint and his younger full-sister The Velvet Queen is a $6 second-favourite in this year’s edition for their trainer Darren McAuliffe.
Universal Ruler is the only son of Champion sire Scenic (Sadler’s Wells) at stud in Australia and his Scenic Lodge colleague Dash For Cash (Secret Savings) is great value for a stallion with career-stats of 411 individual winners at an amazing 66% strike-rate.
In other Scenic Lodge news this week, Stakes-winning mare Sniparoochy (Snippetson) changed hands for $155,000 at the Inglis May (Early) Online Sale. She was purchased by Belmont Bloodstock (as agent) for Cathy Hains who operates Burnewang North Pastoral in Victoria.

Blackfriars will be remembered as one of the greatest stallions to have ever stood in WA. To have stood Blackfriars after a champion sire like Scenic, has been an incredible privilege. Black Fantasy went back-to-back on the weekend following his victory in the LR Aquanita Stakes (2000m) earlier this month. He scored by three-quarters of a length from Flower In The Wind (Sebring) and they gapped the rest of the field with third-placed Tizzle Top (Vert De Grece) five lengths astern
“He went from being placed in the Magic Millions Trophy (1200m) to being placed the WATC Derby (2400m) last prep,” co-trainer Dan Pearce said. “And he’s made this prep his own by winning the Aquanita and Belmont Classic.
“He’s earned a break now and looks a serious horse for next season.”
Black Fantasy (3g Blackfriars – Dreamalong by Southern Image) was a $36,000 buy for Pearce Racing from Scenic Lodge at the 2020 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale. He’s a three-quarter brother to Shining Knight (Blackfriars) who won a G3 Belmont Sprint for Peters Investments in 2015. Dreamalong was purchased by Scenic Lodge for $25,000 a year earlier from Peters Investments. She has a yearling filly by Magnus and weanling colt by Snippetson.
The Belmont meeting was something of a field day for Scenic Lodge.
Universal Ruler doubled up with his unbeaten 2yo Aztec Ruler in Race 1 and 3yo filly The Velvet Queen who sprouted wins for Impressive Racing in Race 9.
Dash For Cash mare I’m Pretty was also a quick closer for Durrant Racing in Race 2. It added more EPONA credits to the $6,490 that the rising 7yo mare has banked for her first cover to a TBWA accredited stallion.
Scenic Lodge graduate Phanta (Gingerbread Man) is another winner off the Muchea nursery looking good value after changing hands for just $5,000 at the 2019 Perth Magic Millions. His bank-balance increased to $218,880 after Race 4 on Saturday and that includes Westspeed Platinum bonuses of $46,800.

Jeanella is bred to be a winner and she showed a will-to-win on par with her pedigree at Belmont on Wednesday.
The 2yo filly by Scenic Lodge sire Universal Ruler was racing on debut and was always travelling like a winner for trainer Adam Durrant and his mother Vicki. She settled in the box-seat for Clint Johnston-Porter and let down with a determined finish to run down Bisector (Demerit) in the Amelia Park Maiden (1000m).
Jeanella is a half-sister to five winners including Mr Genoa (Blackfriars) who won 7 races in WA and Victoria including the 2019 Country Championship Final at Ascot. “It was no surprise to see her do such a good job first-up,” stable foreman Jason Miller conceded. “Clint rode her well, too.
“She comes from a good family and has a bright future. They’ve all shown ability although this one is much better behaved.”
Their NZ-bred dam Jean (Volksraad) was a 2yo winner at Awapuni and went on to win another four races in Perth at Belmont (3) and Ascot. Her most recent cover was to Dash For Cash last October.
“She’s a professional,” Johnston-Porter reported. “She’s one of the quietest 2yo winners I’ve ridden and felt like a winner in running.”
Universal Ruler (Scenic) also sired Rulelee to win first-up for trainer Sue Olive at Belmont last Saturday. The 4yo mare had won two in a row at Ascot and Belmont earlier this year for Vaughn Sigley and owner-breeders Glen & Jan Kettlewell.
The Kettlewells and Kim Renner stand G2 MVRC Stutt Stakes winner Leonardo Da Hinchi (Hinchinbrook) with Alan & Sue Olive at Gold Front Thoroughbreds. Rulelee’s dam Leenornie (Oratorio) foaled a first-crop colt by Leonardo Da Hinchi last August.
Universal Ruler maintained an outstanding yearling sale return at the Perth Magic Millions in February with an average of $81,200. That was a 12.3 multiplication off his service fee in 2019.

Scenic Lodge is delighted to announce Kristy Reynolds appointment as Stud Manager.
It’s an amazing story, Kristy started with Scenic Lodge on school work experience at the age of only 14 and has now progressed to Stud Manager.
From Kristy’s very first day her natural talent with the horses shone through, she is a natural talented horsewoman. Work experience led her to some part-time work which then developed into full-time work.
Kristy has had the opportunity to learn and develop at Scenic Lodge working under some good management
and Vets. Her progression was so rapid that in 2019 Kristy was appointed to the dual role of Stallion Manager and Assistant Manager at the young age of 21.
Kristy is very enthusiastic, and passionate and is extremely excited about taking on the new role and leading the Scenic lodge team into the future.

Universal Ruler’s 2yo filly Penny On The Queen has ability to burn and the Scenic Lodge sire followed up with talented 2yo colt Lord Gannicus at Belmont last Wednesday.
Penny On The Queen won an Ascot nursery in February prior to black-type placings behind Amelia’s Jewel in the G3 Gimcrack Stakes and G2 Karrakatta Plate.
Lord Gannicus (2c Universal Ruler – Hello Paris by Rothesay) had been runner-up on debut to Tiffany Street (Street Boss) at Ascot on May 7 which augured nicely for the Crown Perth Maiden (1200m) at the midweek meeting.
Sent out a long odds-on favourite, he was caught without cover but had enough class to prevail by a half-neck over Rockon Molly (Awesome Rock). “He’s still a prep away but did a really good job today,” trainer Grant Williams said. “He will furnish into a real good horse so we will either give him one more run or sent him straight to the paddock.”
Winning jockey Pat Carbery is also keen on his prospects next season. “He jumped better than I expected and I tried to save him for the business end. He had to dig deep and will appreciate a longer trip than 1200m.”
Lord Gannicus is a homebred for Elio Galante who has raced several winners by Universal Ruler starting with Snow Lord who won 7 races for earnings of $334,300.
Galante and his wife Jacqui have yearling and weanling full-sisters to Lord Gannicus in the pipeline. Their dam Hello Paris won city races at Belmont (3) and Ascot and second-dam Paris Heartbeat (Marooned) was a Listed winner in Melbourne (Summoned Stakes) and Brisbane (Glenlogan Park Stakes).
