Ruler Reminder For Breeders

rebel kingUniversal Ruler’s winning double at Belmont on Saturday was a timely reminder to broodmare owners with the covering season just weeks away.
The Scenic Lodge stallion has built up one of the best strike-rates in the nation and he’s available at a $5,500 (plus gst) service fee this year.

Jim Taylor’s filly Rule To Wyn won for the fifth time in the Westspeed 3YO Hcp (1000m) and Darren McAuliffe’s stable star Rebel King prevailed in a hair-raising finish to the LR Bolton Sprint (1200m).

McAuliffe has been one of the young stallion’s major supporters at stud.  “I think the world of Universal Ruler,” he said.  “I bought him at the Perth Magic Millions and broke him in as a yearling.  He was a Group 3 winner and now doing a great job at stud.”

Rebel King (3g Universal Ruler – Rebel Sister by Falbrav) locked in the first stakes win for his sire on Saturday.  He had won four in a row at Belmont as a winter two year-old but failed first-up this season in the LR Belgravia Stakes won by Disposition.

In his only other black-type assignment, Rebel King was runner-up in the LR Beaufine Sprint (1000m) on July 11.  “He’s been up against older horses and that makes it a lot harder,” McAuliffe said.  “Delicacy and Disposition are probably the only three-year-olds here that have been more consistent.”

The Bolton Sprint improved Rebel King’s record to 6 wins and 6 placings in 14 starts for $445,325 in prizemoney and that includes $120,000 in Westspeed bonuses.

Universal Ruler (Scenic) moved past $1 million in earnings for the season last week and his winning strike of 52% is only bettered by I Am Invincible (55%) among Australia’s second-season stallions.

Snippetson Sires 10th Juvenile winner in Singapore

Scenic Lodge sire Snippetson was represented by his latest two year-old winner when newcomer Lim’s Sincere landed the Initiation Stakes (1000m) in Singapore on Friday.

The Steven Burridge trained youngster had trialled reasonably well and was a lot more forward on debut under stable apprentice Syafiq Hazman. He jumped straight to the front but had to be bustled to head off Anak Penang who wouldn’t surrender the rails at Kranji.

Given extra rein at the top of the straight, he responded to skip clear for a convincing victory. “That was a strong race but he’s shown ability from Day 1,” Burridge said. “He had a couple of trials and then went shin-sore. He was also a very excitable type and we had to teach him to settle.

Lims sincere“We’ve held him up in trials but decided to just let him run today and it’s paid off.”

Lim’s Sincere (2g Snippetson – Exabaa by Anabaa) was purchased by Mick Dittman at the 2014 Gold Coast 2YO HIT Sale for $30,000. The former champion jockey is the racing manager for Lim’s Stable.

Syafiq was instructed to use his mount’s speed in the early stages. “Mr Burridge told me to lead if possible. The horse on the inside kept me out but that was okay as he was travelling on the bit. He gave a nice kick and was too good for them.”

The Singapore result sent Snippetson’s current crop of juvenile winners into double figures. He has sired 9 domestic individual winners in that division headed by Flemington stakes winning filly My Poppette.

Snippetson will stand for a $6,500 (plus gst) fee at Scenic Lodge this year.

Career Best Season For Blackfriars

blackfriarsA ground-breaking season for Blackfriars reached another level at Belmont on Saturday when he achieved a career-high $4.36 million in prizemoney.
It bettered his previous record of $4.29 million set in the 2011-12 season.
Blackfriars is a few weeks away from winning his fifth Sunspeed sires’ title and he sits 22nd on the Australian premiership which is a truly amazing statistic for a stallion based in Western Australia throughout his stud career.
A Belmont double on Saturday courtesy of Woodsville and Young Lionel contributed over $65,000 to the total. Both geldings are six year-olds and are racing as well as ever.
Black Queen, a half-sister to Karuta Queen, added the extras at Broome on Saturday and Smart As A Fox weighed in with his 6th win in Kalgoorlie on Sunday.
Blackfriars (Danehill) stands for an advertised service fee of $12,000 (plus gst) and Scenic Lodge is currently offering short-term, special discounts for the stud’s four stallions until August 3.
“We want to ensure Blackfriars remains accessible to as many local breeders as possible,” Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith said. “And with some quality books in recent years, we are very confident the best of Blackfriars as a sire is still ahead.”
Scenic Lodge associate Universal Ruler sired his second stakes horse in a week when Rebel King was a brave runner-up in the LR Beaufine Stakes on Saturday. His filly Fo’ Shizzle had been beaten less than a length in the LR Belmont Oaks on July 4.
Front-runner Calabria Joe won for the third time at Belmont on Saturday and that increased his earnings to $176,590 including $60,000 Westspeed bonuses.
It also took Universal Ruler to within $7,000 of breaking through $1 million in progeny earnings this season. He owns a 52% winning strike-rate which is next best to I Am Invincible among Australia’s second-season sires.
Incoming Scenic Lodge stallion Snippetson continued his successful run when Kenjorwood won the Shoot Out Mile despite a wayward finish at Randwick on Saturday. The Peter Moody trained gelding was racing first-up in Sydney and will only improve with the benefit of that clockwise outing.
Snippetson is also a Top 10 stallion on the Australian 2YO winners table with 9 individual winners of $471,110.
Dash For Cash rounds out the Scenic Lodge roster and he was represented by another three winners over the weekend to increase is earnings to $1.25 million this season. His smart sprinter Dodging Bullets completed a hat-trick with a last-start victory at Flemington and trainer Symon Wilde will back him up in Melbourne before the end of the season.
