Sky’s the limit for Blackwood

BlackwoodThe sky’s the limit for Blackwood after the Fred Kersley trained filly stretched her unbeaten run at Belmont on Saturday.

Blackwood is a homebred for Oakland Park owner Neville Duncan and the Blackfriars filly has now won four in a row since April. Saturday’s 4 length victory in the Westspeed Plate (1600m) followed a 7 length runaway a fortnight ago.

“She’s clearly she’s an exceptional filly,” Kersley said. “I don’t know what the bottom is but at this stage I couldn’t ask for anything more and she will likely head for a spell.”

Blackwood (2f Blackfriars – Karriwood by Tobougg) will return next season for the G3 Champion Fillies Stakes at Ascot on November 15. Her connections also have the alternative of taking on the colts for double the prizemoney in the $400,000 G2 WA Guineas on November 22.

Saturday’s result increased her earnings to $222,100 including Westspeed bonuses of $92,500.

Blackfriars has broken through $4 million in prizemoney on the Australian sires’ premiership this season and he’s on track to better his best ever mark of $4.29 million set in 2011-12.

Scenic Lodge will stand Blackfriars for a $12,000 (plus gst) service fee this year.

Universal fillies Rule at Belmont

Universal Ruler

Universal Ruler

Last year’s champion WA freshman Universal Ruler is odds-on to collect the second-season title after siring a city double on Wednesday.

The Scenic Lodge resident has sired the winners of 30 races and over $850,000 this season after his three year-old fillies Rule To Wyn and Fo’ Shizzle saluted at Belmont.

Rule To Wyn scored by more than two lengths from odds-on favourite Volkoff. “She’s honest and appreciated Jordan Turner’s 3kg claim,” trainer Jim Taylor said. “We thought she would get a nice trail behind the leaders looking at the speed map and that’s how it panned out.”

Owners David and Michelle Bagley bought the filly as a foal for $26,000. She’s a half-sister to LR Gimcrack Stakes winner Darlington Abbey and her younger brother Sovereign Hall is an unraced two year-old with Ted Martinovich.

Their dam Wynyard Hall (Blackfriars) is a sister to G2 WA Derby winner Rohan.

Fo’ Shizzle stayed on for her first win in town after duelling with Clobberetta down the straight. She had won at Northam and Narrogin late last year for Impressive Racing’s managing owner Kevin Berry and trainer Darren McAuliffe.

“She came across and was comfortable outside Clobberetta,” jockey Chloe Azzopardi said. “I had been riding her trackwork and was confident she would still be there at the finish. It worked out that way and she will get further than 1300 metres.”

Fo’ Shizzle is the final foal from Precocious Lady (Kenvain). The mare had won a Kalgoorlie maiden and was pensioned after foaling a Dick Turpin colt in September 2013.

The Impressive Racing team won 4 black-type sprints in 12 starts with Universal Ruler before he retired to Scenic Lodge. They have also nominated his stakes winning gelding Rebel King for the TAB Touch Sprint (1000m) at Belmont this Saturday.

Universal Ruler (pictured) has an outstanding winning strike-rate of 51% this season and that’s only been bettered by I Am Invincible (52%) among second-season sires in Australia.

Scenic Lodge will stand Universal Ruler for a $5,500 (plus gst) fee this year.

Blackwood sweeps Westspeed Plate

Trainer Fred Kersley attempted to put a lid on long-term goals for Blackwood after the Blackfriars filly swept her rivals aside at Belmont on Saturday.

The runaway victory – she beat Black Cuban (Blackfriars) by 7 lengths – rates among the most impressive by a two year-old filly in Perth this season. The Westspeed Plate (1400m) completed an unbeaten hat-trick for the Oakland Park filly after earlier wins at Ascot & Belmont in April-May.

“I’m surprised by the winning margin,” Kersley said. “I thought she might have lacked fitness but the others may not have been up to the class.”

Blackwood (2f Blackfriars – Karriwood by Tobougg) owns a pedigree that’s part of the folklore at Oakland Park. Third dam Canon Song (Rory’s Jester) won two Melbourne stakes races in 1996 but that was well and truly eclipsed by her half-sister’s son Northerly.

Sunspeed’s greatest galloper won two Cox Plates and a Caulfield Cup for Kersley and Oakland Park owner Neville Duncan. They have retained Blackwood’s yearling half-brother by Rogano.

Blackwood has joined LR Supremacy Stakes winner London Line (Blackfriars) among the leading local fillies this season alongside Mystic Maid (Patronize), Showy Chloe (Alfred Nobel) and Chantski (War Chant).

Friarbird is another Ascot two year-old winner by Blackfriars spelling in readiness for the filly features in spring and summer. She produced a brilliant turn of foot to win on debut and, like the others, her grand-final will be the G3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) in November.

Scenic Lodge will stand Blackfriars for a $12,000 (plus gst) service fee this year.

Knight Shines for Blackfriars

Shining Knight has landed his third black-type victory for owner-breeders Bob and Sandra Peters this season with a well-timed victory in the G3 Belmont Sprint (1400m).

The Blackfriars gelding settled behind front-runners Fuchsia Bandana and Dawn Approach before launching a powerful finish in the final furlong.  Saturday’s half-length victory increased his earnings to $634,750 following summer carnival victories in the G3 Colonel Reeves Stakes and LR Crawford Stakes.

“He’s doing a great job for us and that race was run to suit with the other two going strong in front,” Peters said.  “He’s a big, strong horse and the 59kg wasn’t a worry.”

Scenic Lodge champion Blackfriars got the Belmont Sprint winner from 2002 Bolton Sprint winner Cool Business (Key Business).  The mare died in March 2011 but her Ascot winning daughter Dreamalong (Southern Image) will continue the line for Scenic Lodge owner David Smith.  She will be covered by Blackfriars this year to produce a three-quarter relation to Shining Knight.

Peters indicated Shining Knight will step up in distance when tackling the G3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) at Belmont on Saturday week, June 13.

Blackfriars has a Group 1 in sight this weekend when Black Heart Bart contests the $2 million Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) at Doomben.  He is coming off a string of wins in Perth and an unlucky last-start fourth in the G1 Goodwood in Adelaide.

The TAB has Black Heart Bart on the second line of markets at $6 behind $5 favourite Lumosty.

Blackfriars (Danehill) will stand for a $13,200 (inc gst) service fee at Scenic Lodge this year.  He’s already home for a fifth Sunspeed sires’ title in a row and a Stradbroke victory would send him through $5 million in prizemoney this season.
