Snippets winner set for Sydney Championships

Royal TudorTrainer Rod Ollerton announced ambitious, long-term plans for Royal Tudor after the Snippetson three year-old won the Hyland Race Colours Hcp (1500m) at Rosehill.

Royal Tudor improved his strike-rate to 4 wins in 8 starts with a narrow victory over More Than Fabulous on Saturday. Jockey Christian Reith steered a course close to the rails while the runner-up scouted wide from the second-half of the field.

Ollerton will set him for the $400,000 Provincial Championships at Randwick in April.

“He’s got a good record and is still a bit raw,” Ollerton said. “I might give him one more start this time in but I have to make sure we’re still eligible for the Provincial Championships. He’s a big, strong horse and I’m expecting him to be even better next year.”

Snippetson has upgraded the pedigree of Royal Tudor. His first three dams – Cute And Cuddly (Danehill Dancer), All That Jazz (Encosta de Lago) and Abbey Tavern (Palace Music) were either unraced or unplaced.

“He’s still pretty green but very tough with a lot of upside,” Reith explained. “He should have won with more authority but his greenness cost him a bigger margin.”

Snippetson is covering his first Sunspeed book at Scenic Lodge and he has three yearlings nominated for the 2016 Perth Magic Millions that were conceived in the Hunter Valley. Among them is the Dawson Stud filly (Lot 166) from Moonee Valley winner Tarp (Bletchley Park).

Sniper pay day in Inglis Sprint

Lady SniperScenic Lodge sire Snippetson has banked another lucrative purse with Lady Sniper in the $250,000 Inglis Sprint (1100m) at Randwick.

The Bjorn Baker trained filly will head for spell following a promising first prep in Sydney. “I told the owners she would be right in the finish,” Baker said after the filly scored by a neck despite scouting wide on Saturday. “She will go out now and come back in the autumn.”

Lady Sniper (3f Snippetson – Lady Titus by Arena) is from a half-sister to the Mister C stakes winners Misty Dawn & Easy Landing and was a $20,000 buy for Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) at the 2014 Inglis Classic Summer Sale.

She had broken her maiden at Beaudesert on Australia Day before transferring to Baker for a second-up win at Canterbury in October.

Lady Sniper’s connections have pocketed over $230,000 and the filly also earned her trainer a pair of Swarovski binoculars on Saturday. “It’s a credit to Craig Rounsefell of Boomer Bloodstock,” Baker declared. “She only cost $20,000 and look at her now – I thought she was a standout in the parade ring.”

Snippetson’s Melbourne based filly My Poppette won the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) in October and his Queensland flyer Security Belle is being set for the Capricornia 2YO Classic (1200m) after a dominant debut at Rockhampton last month.

Scenic Lodge stands Snippetson for a $6,500 (plus gst) service fee. He has sired the winners of $1.25 million this season and is second on the Sunspeed sires’ table behind Scenic Lodge champion Blackfriars ($2.32 million).

Commanding winner from Camperdown

Commanding-DashDash For Cash mare Commanding Dash gave part-owner Barry Phillips his first ever winner when she broke the ice on Wednesday evening.

The grey mare powered her way to an impressive half-length victory in the Electro Rewind Plate (1200m) in Launceston.  Phillips reared her from a weanling and found it hard to contain his emotions when she delivered on the promise shown as a youngster.

“It’s everything I thought it would be and then some,” Phillips said as tears flowed.  “We had high hopes for her early on but she wasn’t ready as a two-year-old so we just had to wait.”

Commanding Dash (4m Dash for Cash – Mrs Commands by Commands) is the first foal of an unraced mare related to stakes winners Handsome Ransom (G3 Black Opal Stakes) and Danajaya (LR Flemington Roses St).

“This mare has been so close to winning with seconds at her last two starts,” trainer John Blacker said.  “It was her turn tonight and she was strong on the line.”

Commanding Dash is a daughter of Scenic Lodge sire Dash For Cash and was initially trained by Darren Weir for placings at Pakenham and Geelong.  Her dam Mrs Commands has since foaled a 2yo colt and yearling colt by Turffontein.

Blackfriars Takes Out Three Stakes Races In One Day…

Blackfriars drew level with legendary Sunspeed stallion Haulpak when Drive West delivered his 33rd stakes winner at Ascot on Saturday.

Drive West completed a black-type hat-trick for the Scenic Lodge champion in the LR Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) following the wins of London Line (LR Fairetha Quality) and Black Heart Bart (G2 Lee-Steere Stakes) earlier in the day.

“What an incredible afternoon for Blackfriars,” Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith declared.  “I spoke to John Chalmers this morning and he could not recall a stallion winning three stakes races in one day in Perth for the last 50 years!”

Blackfriars has sired 6 individual stakes in Australia this season and is second in that category behind Fastnet Rock (8).  He is also 13th in the Australian sires’ premiership with 32 winners of 46 races and earnings over $1.91 million.

Drive West (7g Blackfriars – Victory Romp by Victory Drive) annexed the Ascot Gold Cup by over a length from last-start LR Northam Cup winner Young Lionel who is also by Blackfriars.

The veteran stayer has won 8 races for trainer Joe Miller but it took him 71 starts to break through in a stakes race.  “He was slow to mature but has always shown us enough to keep carrying on,” Miller said.  “He ran into form up at the Goldfields and finished fourth in the Kalgoorlie Cup.”

Drive West is a homebred for Gingin trucking contractor Roydon Daw and his daughter Rene and they race him in partnership with Miller’s son Ben.  “My other son Paul trained his dam’s sister Royal Drive for Roydon,” Miller recalled.  “She was a pretty good filly and won the WA Oaks back in 2005.”

His dam Victory Romp has a yearling colt by Henny Hughes and she foaled a colt from the first-crop of Westbury Park sire Smug (USA) in September.

Miller will now look ahead to the $500,000 G2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on January 2.  The last horse to complete the feature double was Phizam in 1984-85.

Blackfriars will be winning more black-type in the meantime.

Black Heart Bart (5g Blackfriars – Sister Theresa by At Talaq) notched his 8th stakes victory when beating star mare Delicacy in the G2 Lee-Steere Stakes.  He was bred by Scenic Lodge and is the ruling $4.80 favourite for the $1 million G1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 21.

London Line (3g Blackfriars – Line Of Flight by Bletchley Park) won the LR Supremacy Stakes (1100m) in March and the LR Fairetha Quality was his second in a row since racing returned to Ascot.  He was bred by Anita Vale Stud and will be one of the favourites for the $500,000 G2 WA Guineas (1600m) on November 21.

There’s plenty of time for Blackfriars (Danehill) to draw clear of Haulpak but the Heytesbury champion’s roll-call includes Eastern States Group 1 winners Starstruck, Chanteclair and Coal Pak.

Blackfriars has yet to crack a Group 1 winner out of Perth but that could change when his Victoria Derby placegetter Kia Ora Koutou returns to racing later this season.

Scenic Lodge sires collaborate for Capricornia Classic

Ssecurity bellenippetson filly Security Belle will be set for the $100,000 Capricornia 2YO Classic (1200m) at Rockhampton after a dominant debut on Friday.
Security Belle tracked the speed before bursting clear in the CQTBA Maiden Plate (1050m) at Callaghan Park. She hit the line two lengths in advance of Mishani Silva (Bradbury’s Luck) and Mim’s Poet (Poet’s Voice).
“She’s got ability, alright,” trainer Fred Smith said. “She trialled well and did the job today although she’s still green. She will keep improving but is just going off her tucker so I’m sending her straight to the paddock.”
Security Belle is the first juvenile winner of the season for Scenic Lodge sire Snippetson. Smith and part-owner Max Ison bought her for $28,000 and she will be set for the Capricornia 2YO Classic which is held in conjunction with the CQTBA Yearling Sale in April.
The filly’s family has a great strike-rate in the Classic. Her dam Kai Chow (Sanction) won it in 2003 and her dam’s sister Kai Cibo doubled up in 2004.
Snippetson was a Top 10 sire on the 2014-15 Australian 2YO winners premiership and is currently covering his first Sunspeed mares for a $6,500 (plus gst) service fee.
Fellow Scenic Lodge sire Dash For Cash also has a leading prospect for the 2016 Capricornia Classic. His colt Cash Dash topped this year’s auction at $50,000 and that looked money well spent when he came out and won a Gold Coast trial by 9 lengths.

Agents come calling for Kia Ora Koutou

kia ora koutou Vic DerbyTrainer Adam Durrant has received several offers for Kia Ora Koutou since the gelding was placed in the G1 Victoria Derby last Saturday.
The Blackfriars three year-old was well beaten by Tarzino in the $1.50 million classic at Flemington but caught the eye with a powerful finish from the back half of the capacity field. He was hampered passing the 800m when Pay Up Bro shifted in abruptly making heavy contact.
Kia Ora Koutou is a homebred for Durrant’s parents Geoff and Vicki and is from their 2006 Belmont Oaks winner Kia Ora Miss (Jeune) who died in January 2014. They kept a link by retained his city winning older half-sister Aloha Miss (Hurricane Sky) but sold her final foal – a 2yo Blackfriars colt named Kia Ora Star – for $25,000 at this year’s Perth Magic Millions.
The Durrants and the gelding’s other part-owners are in talks with several agents including one from Hong Kong. They have already banked $320,000 – he won four from four in Perth before earning $135,000 at Flemington.
Kia Ora Koutou has pulled in fine fettle this week but a trip home for the Ascot summer carnival is on hold while negotiations continue. “He’s pretty fresh and is bouncing around in his paddock,” Durrant said. “It hasn’t done him any harm. He’s come through the run really well.”

Blackfriars filly rebounds in Burgess Queen

Blackfriars has sired his 32nd stakes winner with untapped three year-old Blackwood.
The Fred Kersley trained filly bounced back from a first-up defeat to win the LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday.
It was the fifth black-type result for Blackfriars in as many weeks following Young Lionel (LR Northam Cup), Black Heart Bart (LR Birthday Stakes & G3 Northerly Stakes) and Woodsville (LR Kalgoorlie Cup).
The Scenic Lodge champion also sired Kia Ora Koutou to finish third in the G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington on Saturday.
Blackwood (3f Blackfriars – Karriwood by Tobougg) was unbeaten in four outings during the Belmont Park winter season and resumed with a placing behind Perfect Reflection in the LR Belgravia Stakes (1200m) on October 21.
Settling much closer to the lead second-up, she responded when Lucy Warwick went for home at the top of the straight to defeat front-runner Showy Chloe (Alfred Nobel) by over a length.
“She’s a quality filly and I’m very pleased with that effort,” Kersley said. “She was exposed first-up and it was an improved performance today. We’re looking forward to the (G3) Champion Fillies in a fortnight.”
Kersley prepares Blackwood for Oakland Park owner-breeder Neville Duncan. She is closely related to their champion galloper Northerly and they have retained her 2yo half-brother Sandalwood (Rogano).
Blackfriars has kicked well clear of his rivals in pursuit of a sixth Sunspeed sires’ title this season. He has sired the winners of over $1.53 million to lead fellow Scenic Lodge stallion Snippetson ($848,700).

Young Lionel signals big week for Blackfriars

Young Lionel is the latest black-type winner for Blackfriars following his half-length victory in the LR Northam Cup (1600m) on Sunday.
The Scenic Lodge champion has now sired 31 stakes winners and it was his third Northam Cup in the last five editions following Son Of Something (2014) and Moneghetti (2011).
The Avon Valley victory begins a big week for Blackfriars who has Kia Ora Koutou lining up as second-favourite for the G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington this Saturday.
Young Lionel is trained by Lou Luciani and he also prepared the gelding’s dam Prime Again (Marooned) to win the 1994 Northam Cup when he was private trainer for Tilden Park owner Dallas Dempster.
“It’s always good to win a race from one you’ve had in the past,” Luciani said. “Prime Again was one of my favourites and this bloke is becoming one, too.”
Young Lionel’s next assignment will be the LR Ascot Gold Cup (1800m) on November 7. He has earned $390,000 for part-owners Colin Teede, Mike Kikeros and Lyle Bailey since graduating from Scenic Lodge for $35,000 at the 2010 Perth Magic Millions.
Blackfriars (Danehill) won the 1999 Victoria Derby for owner-breeder Robert Sangster before retiring to Scenic Lodge where he stands for a $12,000 (plus gst) service fee.young lionel northam cup presentation

Classic conquest by My Poppette

My Poppette gave her new owners Rob and Donna Love a quick return on their investment in the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) on Saturday.

The Snippetson filly controlled proceedings in front and then increased the tempo to trounce her rivals by almost three lengths.  “I was able to dictate and we were home at the 600m,” jockey Mark Zahra said.  “She’s just getting better and improving the further she gets into the preparation.”

My Poppette was bred and raced by Cranbourne’s Alderson family to win a juvenile stakes race at Flemington in April and she changed hands before returning to action this season.  “We didn’t think she was ready for the Thousand Guineas and this race looked perfect,” trainer Robert Smerdon said.  “She’s just coming right and I would like to keep going while she’s racing so well.

“But I don’t want to go one run too many because she can go right on with it after a break in the autumn.”

The Loves have made several astute investments in recent years buying G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Shamal Wind (Dubawi) and Black Caviar’s half-sister Belle Couture (Redoute’s Choice) who foaled a Pierro colt in August.

My Poppette (3f Snippetson – Brompton’s Choice by Runyon) is from a half-sister to the dam of Neo (G2 Wellington Guineas) and other close relations include Brompton Cross (G2 Edward Manifold Stakes) and her son Delago Brom (G1 Australian Guineas).

The Moonee Valley win completed a city treble within 24 hours for Snippetson following Lady Sniper (Canterbury) and Our Lady Mac (Doomben).  The Scenic Lodge sire is covering his first Sunspeed mares for a $6,500 (plus gst) service fee.
